HRC, HB and HV: When Hardness Numbers Cannot Be Compared Directly

Hardness values on different scales can look as though they belong on one continuous ruler. They do not. Rockwell, Brinell and Vickers tests create and evaluate indentations in different ways, under different test conditions, and over different sampled volumes of material. A conversion table estimates a relationship for a defined material and range; it does not perform another indentation or turn the source result into a measured value on the target scale.
This distinction matters when a drawing requires one native hardness method but a certificate reports another. The existing discussion of sprocket hardness and core toughness addresses wider performance context. Here, the task is limited to deciding whether an HRC, HB, HV or related conversion is supportable and whether it is sufficient for the procurement decision.
Keep the original hardness result
Preserve the native result exactly as reported. Connect it to the part, material, heat and lot, then record the test location. Surface, subsurface and core locations can represent different material conditions, especially after surface treatment or where a hardness gradient exists. A value without a location cannot be moved to another location through conversion.
Record the complete native scale or designation, not just a number followed by H. Retain the invoked test method and edition and the reported indenter, test force or load, dwell and other method-specific conditions where required. A line such as “measured 32 HRC” must remain visible even when an approximate HB or HV value is added for screening. The converted line should always point back to that source measurement.
Capture the test surface preparation, specimen or part thickness, support condition and curvature context. Different methods impose different indentation-size and geometry constraints. A surface result on a curved tooth, a macrohardness result on a prepared coupon and a microhardness traverse through a case are not interchangeable samples merely because a converter accepts their displayed symbols.
Retain individual readings, any authorized summary and the report's symbol formatting. Hardness numbers are conventionally associated with scale designations rather than treated as physical units that can be freely cancelled in an equation. Record the machine, laboratory, report number, sample identity and relevant trace. This creates an audit trail without declaring that the original indentation was valid; native-test validity remains a separate review of the method, surface, spacing, equipment and sample.
If the certificate contains only a converted value, ask for the native reading and its test record. Without the original method and location, the reviewer cannot tell what was measured, what table was used or whether conversion was permitted.
Check the scope of the conversion table
Identify the conversion standard, edition and exact table before reading across scales. The ASTM public listing for ASTM E140 describes material-specific approximate conversions and explains that alloy, structure and heat treatment affect the relationship. Its active listing is ASTM E140-12b(2019)e1 at this research cutoff. The official page for ISO 18265:2013 identifies that document as current after confirmation in 2024 and limits direct applicability to the material used to establish the relationship.
Match the table's material or alloy family to the actual material. Then match microstructure, heat-treatment state and cold-work condition where those factors affect the relation. A table developed for one class of steel cannot be assumed valid for another alloy. A through-hardened homogeneous region and a heterogeneous or case-hardened transition can also depart from the relationship even when both yield a native HRC reading.
Check that the source value lies inside the table's native-scale range and that the requested target scale is covered. Do not interpolate across a stated gap, extrapolate beyond a range, splice two tables together or move through an intermediate scale to reach a desired number. Choosing whichever converter gives the most favorable result is not a technical resolution.
Review the test-force context and the different material volumes sampled by the native and target methods. Buehler's technical discussion of hardness conversion explains that methods sample material differently and that conversion uncertainty is not universal. Surface gradients, local heterogeneity, curvature and thickness can therefore make a mathematically available lookup unsuitable for the actual decision.
Keep hardness-to-hardness conversion separate from any approximate relationship to tensile strength. A tensile estimate is not a tensile test and cannot certify a tensile requirement. Record the table's rounding instruction and preserve enough source precision to follow it, but do not add false precision. When the source is outside the table or its material scope is unknown, the correct output is “unsupported conversion,” not a guessed value.
Control the conversion source like any other technical reference. A generic spreadsheet may retain a familiar lookup while hiding the standard edition, material category or revisions made by its author. Record the published source and table identifier, then verify that the implemented entries and rounding match that source. Password protection or a company logo does not establish technical validity. If the converter cannot show its provenance, preserve its output only as an unverified calculation and return to the named standard.
Separate conversion from acceptance
A useful record shows two different fields: the measured native result and the approximately converted comparison value. The second field should name the conversion standard, edition, table, material scope, source scale, target scale and rounding applied. It should never be labeled measured, tested or certified on the target scale.
State the purpose of the conversion. It may support preliminary screening, comparison of historical records or a specification discussion. Acceptance is different. If the purchase order or drawing requires a direct native-scale test, a converted value inside the numerical limit is not automatically acceptable. Conversion must be expressly permitted by the controlling requirement or accepted through an authorized agreement or deviation.
Conversion standards warn that the relationships are approximate, yet a report may not provide a decision-specific uncertainty for the calculated value. Do not manufacture confidence bounds from the spacing between table entries. Borderline values deserve particular care because rounding and material-specific variation can change the apparent side of a limit without providing new measurement evidence.
Online tools can reduce transcription errors when correctly configured. A ZwickRoell calculator, for example, can implement named ISO and ASTM tables after the user selects inputs. The output does not establish that the chosen table applies, that the source test is valid or that the buyer has authority to accept conversion.
Certificates sometimes contain a chain of derived values: one native reading, several converted hardness scales and an estimated tensile value. Review the chain from its first measured line. Each later value inherits the source test's location and limitations and adds its own table assumptions. A second conversion does not corroborate the first, and agreement between two calculators is not an independent measurement. The acceptance record should identify which value the order actually requires and whether that value was directly tested.

The normal state means the conversion is documented for its permitted purpose, not that the lot passes. Missing and conflict states are not invitations to average results, change tables or round toward acceptance.
Ask for a matching test when the decision depends on it
Request direct testing on the scale and method required by the controlled drawing, specification or purchase order when the acceptance decision depends on that result. Define the representative location and depth through the product requirement or approved sampling plan. Do not move a surface result to the core or use a bulk indentation to establish a case profile.
The qualified laboratory or metrology owner should confirm that the part geometry is accessible and that surface preparation, minimum thickness, support, indentation spacing and edge distance can meet the invoked native method. If the finished part cannot support a valid test at the required location, the design and quality owners must approve an alternative coupon, sample or method. Destructive sampling should never be improvised where it could create a safety or asset risk.
For recurring work, a material-specific relationship may be developed from paired native tests on representative material and conditions. Such a study needs a controlled range, qualified methods, adequate samples and an approved statistical and technical basis. It does not validate every earlier conversion or replace the native test outside its defined scope.
Record laboratory capability, sample identity and any retest or resample authority. If a new native result corrects or replaces a certificate, retain version control and link the corrected report to the affected drawing or specification revision. A concession should name its owner, scope and affected lot rather than becoming an informal permanent conversion rule.
Keep the material on hold only through the organization's authorized disposition system, and leave release or rejection to its named owner. No conversion table validates the original indentation, certifies tensile strength or proves component performance. When the correct table, material context or native test is missing, a matching test or an approved deviation is the defensible next step.
